Olympic canoeist David Hearn pleaded not guilty in Washington, D.C., Superior Court to a felony charge alleging he damaged the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.

According to CNN, Hearn, 67, was indicted on July 2 on one count of destruction of property exceeding $1,000. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison.

Hearn's attorney argued in court that the government's evidence is weak. Although the defense invoked Hearn's right to a speedy trial, the judge said the court's schedule would likely delay proceedings until February 2027. No trial date has been set, and the next hearing is scheduled for August 5.

The report said the case follows the Trump administration's claim that damage to the recently renovated Reflecting Pool, including its peeling surface, amounted to serious vandalism.

Three other defendants have also pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor property damage charges. Supporters gathered outside the courthouse, calling for Hearn's release and protesting the prosecution.
