OpenAI is introducing a dedicated “ChatGPT for Teens” experience with additional safeguards for minors, according to the company and CNN. The rollout comes as OpenAI faces lawsuits and growing scrutiny over allegations that ChatGPT contributed to harm involving young people.
The new protections include reminders encouraging teens to take breaks after extended use, along with optional “Quiet Hours” and “Study Hours.” OpenAI also said it has strengthened safeguards against the chatbot expressing personal feelings toward users and will warn teens before they upload sensitive images.
The move follows concerns over inappropriate content, addiction, loneliness and impaired critical thinking. OpenAI has disputed allegations made in lawsuits, while previously adding parental controls and distress alerts. CNN reported that additional eating-disorder alerts for parents are also planned.
