Pope Leo XIV condemned war as a “painful defeat” of diplomacy and urged world leaders to resolve conflicts through negotiation and international law during a historic address to Spain’s parliament, according to CNN.
He stressed that peace requires diplomatic courage, ethical responsibility and a commitment to dialogue.
The report said Pope Leo also warned against excessive military spending and called on political leaders to avoid demonizing opponents. He urged governments to uphold human dignity, particularly in addressing migration challenges and protecting vulnerable populations.
Leo also reaffirmed the Catholic Church’s defense of human life from conception to natural death and emphasized the role of faith in public life.
