Republicans Pass First Piece Of Trump Budget After All-Night Debate

Congressional Republicans advanced key parts of President Donald Trump’s sweeping budget package on Wednesday, approving massive tax cuts in a 26-19 vote after an all-night House Ways and Means Committee session.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates the plan would cut 7.7 million people from Medicaid, saving $715 billion. A separate measure would impose work requirements on food stamp recipients, shifting costs to states.

At least five protesters, including three in wheelchairs, were escorted out during a tense Medicaid debate. Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” faces a tight timeline, with the U.S. approaching a summer debt ceiling deadline. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned Congress must act by mid-July to avoid default. Republicans will need party unity to push the bill through both chambers.
