Schumer Forces Name Change Of ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ Before Senate Vote

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer

Moments before the Senate passed President Donald Trump’s sweeping tax and spending package, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer succeeded in stripping the bill of its Trump-given title, “One Big Beautiful Bill.”

Schumer argued the title violated the Byrd Rule — Section 313 B1A of the Congressional Budget Act — which prohibits “extraneous matter” in budget legislation. The bill will now be referred to simply as “the act.”

“This is not a ‘big, beautiful bill’ at all,” Schumer told reporters. “It is really the big ugly betrayal, and the American people know it.”

Schumer warned the legislation would trigger massive job losses, cuts to health care, and historic debt, saying it “will haunt our Republican colleagues for years to come.”

He also pointed to the surprise retirement of Sen. Thom Tillis, a critic of the bill, as proof of internal GOP dissent. The bill passed after a 24-hour marathon session, with Vice President JD Vance breaking the tie.
