South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has urged renewed talks between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, saying a summit could create an opportunity for peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, Lee described Trump’s interest in meeting Kim as a chance to restart stalled diplomacy.
Lee proposed using renewed dialogue to halt further expansion of North Korea’s nuclear and missile capabilities, followed by reductions and eventually a denuclearized peninsula.
However, North Korea has continued to reject denuclearization. Kim Yo Jong recently described the country’s nuclear status as permanent and said its arsenal serves as a deterrent.
Trump and Lee also reportedly discussed deeper cooperation on defense and strategic projects, including nuclear submarine fuel, shipbuilding and wartime operational control, according to South Korean national security adviser Wi Sung-lac.
