China’s industrial system could satisfy only about 60% of military drone demand during a sudden major conflict, according to a study published in the Journal of System Simulation.

Researchers led by Professor Zhang Jihai of Beijing Institute of Technology used an AI model to examine China’s drone supply chain. The simulation considered inventories, production capacity, supplier networks, budgets and the conversion of civilian factories to military production.

The study found that even a sharp increase in production would not quickly eliminate shortages because new factories require time to build and civilian facilities cannot be converted instantly. In one scenario where demand tripled, wartime order fulfillment reached only 63.4%.

The report said broader national mobilization could produce different results. Chinese manufacturers making electronics, batteries, vehicles and machinery could potentially be redirected toward defense production.

An unnamed Chinese weapons expert cautioned that rapid expansion alone may not solve shortages of critical components. The study also found AI-based mobilization performed better than rule-based or no mobilization strategies, although physical production constraints remained significant.
