Super Typhoon Bavi has struck the U.S. territory of Rota with sustained winds of 180 mph, causing flooding, widespread power outages, and significant disruption across the Northern Mariana Islands.
According to the report, the Category 5-equivalent storm made landfall early on July 6 local time, prompting the National Weather Service Guam to issue an extreme wind warning urging residents to seek immediate shelter.
The report said flash flood warnings remained in effect across much of the Northern Mariana Islands, although no casualties had been reported at the time of publication.
Guam has remained under a state of emergency since July 4, with U.S. military installations at their highest level of storm readiness.
According to the report, forecasters expect Typhoon Bavi to continue toward Taiwan, the Philippines, and China later this week.
