Trump Announces Plans For Major Oil, Gas And Mineral Exploration In Greenland

The announcement follows a security agreement signed by the United States, Greenland and Denmark more than four weeks ago.

President Donald Trump said major oil, gas and mineral exploration is preparing to begin in Greenland, highlighting the island’s potential energy wealth and strategic importance to US national security.

In a statement on Truth Social, Trump claimed Greenland could hold substantial quantities of accessible oil but provided no details about the proposed exploration plans, according to CBS News.

The deal expands American access to Greenland’s airspace and territory, supports cooperation on minerals and allows the expansion of the Pituffik Space Base. Additional military installations could also be established, subject to approval by the parties.

Trump has long argued that Greenland’s geographic position makes it important for American defence, including early warning against potential missile attacks.

However, industry experts say the island’s resources remain relatively unexplored, partly because extraction costs have historically limited commercial interest.
