President Donald Trump is expected to nominate Dr. Heidi Overton as the next commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, according to CNN, citing two people familiar with the matter.

Overton currently serves as deputy director of the White House Domestic Policy Council and has helped shape the administration’s health care policies. A physician, she previously worked in Trump’s first administration before joining the conservative America First Policy Institute.

The expected nomination follows the May resignation of former FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary. Administration officials have been seeking a leader capable of stabilizing an agency that has faced personnel turnover and internal policy disputes.

Bloomberg News first reported Overton’s expected selection. Other candidates included Rep. Brad Wenstrup and acting FDA Commissioner Kyle Diamantas, both of whom declined the position.

If formally nominated, Overton could face a closely watched Senate confirmation process. Her selection may also draw scrutiny from some supporters of the Make America Healthy Again movement over disagreements surrounding vaccines and pesticide policy.

Overton has worked with HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., but questions remain about how the two would work together under the FDA’s organizational structure.
