U.S. Intel: Putin More Entrenched Than Ever As Trump Pushes For Ukraine Peace

Russian President Vladimir Putin with President Donald Trump

A new U.S. intelligence assessment concludes that Russian President Vladimir Putin is showing no willingness to compromise in the war on Ukraine, despite President Donald Trump’s ongoing push for peace talks.

The report, shared with Congress this month, finds Putin more entrenched than ever as he seeks to justify heavy troop losses and economic damage by expanding Russia’s territorial control.

In response, President Trump canceled a planned meeting with Putin in Budapest and imposed sanctions on two major Russian oil companies—the first punitive measures since returning to office.

Trump said the “tremendous” sanctions were meant to pressure Moscow into “making a deal” and ending the war.

While Trump has long pledged to secure peace in Ukraine, his efforts have yet to yield results.

U.S. officials and European allies say the sanctions, along with Ukrainian drone strikes and Western arms aid, could eventually shift the Kremlin’s stance.
