British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that he will step down as leader of the Labour Party after concluding that he is no longer the right person to lead the party into the next general election.
He added that every major decision during his tenure had been guided by what he believed was best for the country. Starmer said he informed King Charles III of his decision earlier in the day.
According to his announcement, Labour’s National Executive Committee has been asked to begin a leadership contest, with nominations opening on July 9 and the process completed before Parliament returns in September.
Until a successor is chosen, Starmer will remain prime minister and oversee an orderly transition of power. He pledged full support for the next Labour leader and expressed gratitude to colleagues, civil servants, friends and his family, particularly his wife and children.
