Federal authorities have launched an investigation after a large “8647” marking was discovered etched into the grass of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., raising concerns about vandalism at one of the nation’s most prominent public spaces.
The marking was spotted Thursday near the World War II Memorial by a Reuters photographer observing the area from the Washington Monument.
Shortly after the discovery, U.S. Park Police and National Guard personnel arrived to secure the location and begin assessing the incident.
The phrase “8647” has emerged as a politically charged slogan associated with opposition to President Donald Trump, the 47th president of the United States.
The controversy surrounding the slogan has intensified in recent months. Federal officials have argued that some uses of the phrase may imply threats or incitement, while free speech advocates contend that it is a form of political expression protected by the Constitution.
Courts have also been asked to weigh in on disputes involving displays of the slogan in public spaces.
Authorities have not announced any suspects or disclosed how the marking was created, and the investigation remains ongoing.
