Two Senate Democrats are urging the Trump administration to halt efforts to establish a West Coast Strategic Petroleum Reserve, arguing that the proposal lacks congressional approval and could violate federal law, according to a letter obtained by CNN.

Sens. Alex Padilla and Patty Murray wrote to Energy Secretary Chris Wright, requesting that the Department of Energy stop work on the project until Congress authorizes it.

The report said the proposal emerged from discussions involving Sable Offshore Corp. and administration officials amid concerns over energy security and supply disruptions linked to the Iran conflict.

According to CNN, the administration has acknowledged being in active discussions about a regional emergency oil reserve. Supporters argue California's limited pipeline connections and strategic military importance justify additional energy safeguards.

Critics contend the idea is politically motivated and question its effectiveness. Energy analysts told CNN that California's larger challenge is refining capacity, not crude oil availability.

The lawmakers also noted that Congress did not allocate funding for a new regional reserve in the current fiscal year, raising further legal and procedural concerns.
