Maine Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner suspended his campaign on Wednesday, clearing the way for the state Democratic Party to choose a new candidate to challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins in November's midterm election.
Platner's decision came after a woman accused him of raping her in 2021 during a dating relationship.
The report said Platner plans to formally withdraw before Maine's July 13 deadline. The state Democratic Party will then have two weeks to nominate a replacement.
Potential contenders include former state Sen. Troy Jackson, former Maine CDC director Nirav Shah, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows and businessman Dan Kleban. Democrats view the Maine race as critical to their effort to regain a Senate majority.
