The United States will impose 25% tariffs on selected Brazilian imports beginning July 22 after concluding that Brazil engaged in unfair trade practices, reported by CBS News, citing the Associated Press.

According to the report, the Trump administration said the measures target issues including weak anti-corruption enforcement, barriers affecting American technology companies and trade practices that allegedly disadvantage U.S. producers. The tariffs will be implemented under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.

The White House exempted products such as coffee, beef, oranges, orange juice, certain oil and gas products, and aerospace components, saying the goal is to avoid disrupting U.S. supply chains.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva rejected the allegations, saying there was no justification for unilateral action and noting that the United States has recorded a trade surplus with Brazil over the past 15 years, according to U.S. government data.

Trump administration officials denied that political considerations influenced the decision.
