President Donald Trump said Friday that he will not sign the bipartisan 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, citing Republican lawmakers' failure to pass the SAVE America Act, an election measure he has made a top legislative priority.
Despite Trump's refusal to sign the bill, it is expected to become law automatically on Saturday unless he formally vetoes it.
The housing bill, passed by Congress last month, aims to address housing affordability through bipartisan reforms. Trump, however, has argued that Republicans should first approve the SAVE America Act, which seeks to tighten voter registration rules and address noncitizen voting, an issue he has repeatedly highlighted.
The report said Trump previously canceled a planned signing ceremony for the housing bill over the same dispute, underscoring his focus on election-related legislation ahead of the midterm elections.
