President Donald Trump approved allowing Brazilian senator Flávio Bolsonaro and his family to enter the United States after Bolsonaro lost Brazil’s presidential runoff, a Trump adviser told CNN.
US officials reportedly began arranging visas after Brazil’s Supreme Court ordered Bolsonaro to surrender his passports within 24 hours. Brazilian authorities subsequently canceled his passports, according to CNN Brasil.
Bolsonaro faces investigations in Brazil involving alleged corruption, money laundering and currency evasion. He denies wrongdoing. At the time of his departure, no arrest warrant had been issued, though legal analysts said defying the court’s order could provide grounds for one.
Trump criticized Brazil’s election, which leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won by 4.4 million votes. Lula called Bolsonaro’s departure shameful, saying he should remain in Brazil to face the allegations.
