Authorities in Ohio have rescued 16 children from a rural home in Vinton County after discovering what officials described as some of the worst living conditions they had ever encountered.
The children, ranging in age from 18 months to 18 years, were found during the execution of a search warrant related to an unrelated investigation.
Officials said several of the children showed signs of severe developmental delays, with some unable to speak and one 18-year-old reportedly unable to write her own name.
Seven children were taken to hospitals for treatment, including two who were airlifted to trauma centers, while one remained in critical condition following the rescue.
The children's parents and two grandparents have been charged with felony child endangerment.
Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the case as child welfare authorities work to provide medical care, protection and long-term support for the rescued children.
