Concerns Grow Over Trump’s Choice To Lead Intelligence Community

Office of the Director of National Intelligence only began the formal clearance process this week by requesting a background investigation

Bill Pulte

Bill Pulte, President Donald Trump’s choice to serve as acting Director of National Intelligence, did not hold a security clearance before being selected for the position, according to CNN, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The report said the Office of the Director of National Intelligence only began the formal clearance process this week by requesting a background investigation.

Sources told CNN there is no evidence Pulte previously held even a basic security clearance or underwent the standard vetting process typically required for access to classified information.

Pulte, currently serving as director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, has limited publicly known national security experience. His appointment has drawn criticism from lawmakers and intelligence experts concerned about granting access to highly sensitive information without traditional qualifications.

Trump defended the selection, describing Pulte as intelligent and trustworthy while emphasizing the role is temporary. According to the report, Trump could authorize access to classified information before the vetting process is completed.

Several lawmakers from both parties have expressed concerns, arguing that leadership of the intelligence community requires extensive experience, rigorous screening and the confidence of intelligence agencies and international partners.
