President Donald Trump faces a high-profile test of his influence over Republicans in South Carolina as divisions deepen over his Senate candidate Darline Graham.
According to CNN, Graham’s campaign has faced criticism following a debate in which she struggled to answer whether Taiwan and the South China Sea represent U.S. national security concerns. She said national security was “not my thing,” while promising to learn.
The episode has prompted criticism from several Republicans, including former Gov. Nikki Haley and Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts. Rep. Ralph Norman, Graham’s runoff opponent, has gained support from former Gov. Mark Sanford and other GOP figures.
The report said the runoff has become increasingly contentious, with outside groups spending heavily on both sides. Norman has also injected more than $1.7 million of his own money into his campaign.
The race could offer an important measure of Trump’s ability to unite South Carolina Republicans behind his preferred candidate.
