The Justice Department dispatched an attorney to observe ballot processing operations in Los Angeles on Friday as federal officials continued reviewing election-related concerns tied to California’s ongoing primary vote count.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said his office has multiple election fraud investigations underway and confirmed that federal authorities are monitoring developments as ballots continue to be processed.
However, officials have not publicly identified specific cases or allegations under investigation.
The federal scrutiny follows claims by President Donald Trump that Democrats were attempting to influence the outcome of California’s gubernatorial and mayoral primaries.

Trump cited the pace of vote counting as evidence of potential wrongdoing, though he did not provide evidence to support the allegations.
According to California Secretary of State Shirley Weber, more than 713,000 ballots remained outstanding in Los Angeles County as of Thursday. State law allows election officials up to 30 days to complete the official canvass and certify results.
Governor Gavin Newsom rejected the allegations, accusing Trump of spreading misinformation about California’s election process.
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said it had not received any complaints from federal authorities regarding election misconduct.
Essayli also confirmed that his office is working with Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon on a separate review of California’s voter rolls.
