The Missouri skydiving community is mourning the loss of 12 people who died when a plane carrying a pilot and 11 passengers crashed shortly after takeoff and burst into flames near a local airfield.
Authorities said all occupants aboard the aircraft were killed in the crash, which occurred Sunday. Several of the victims were experienced skydivers who were well known within the close-knit community.
Family members of some passengers were reportedly at the airport preparing to watch the jump and witnessed the tragic accident unfold.
Friends and fellow skydivers described the victims as part of a unique community bonded by a shared passion for flight.
The crash has sent shockwaves through Missouri’s skydiving community, where participants often develop strong personal relationships through years of training, travel, and shared experiences.
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board are working to determine the cause of the accident.
Officials said weather conditions do not appear to have been a factor, but a final report could take a year or more to complete.
Until then, authorities will continue examining the aircraft, flight records, and other evidence to establish what led to the fatal crash.
