French firefighters are battling a major wildfire in the Fontainebleau forest south of Paris after flames burned more than 800 hectares, reported by CNN.

Firefighting aircraft have been drawing water from the River Seine to contain the blaze, while French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said authorities are investigating whether the fire was deliberately started.

According to the report, France and several other European countries are facing extreme heat that has intensified wildfire risks. A wet winter followed by repeated heatwaves created dry vegetation that fueled larger fires across the region.

The report said the heatwave has also caused widespread health and economic impacts. More than 2,000 heat-related deaths were recorded in France during the last week of June, while Spain continues to battle deadly wildfires. England, Wales and Germany have also reported rising heat-related deaths and drownings.

High temperatures are affecting nuclear power generation, reducing crop forecasts and increasing the risk of mosquito-borne diseases across Europe, according to the report.
