The rapid expansion of AI data centers is emerging as an unexpected political issue ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, according to Axios. Candidates from both parties are increasingly distancing themselves from projects that once enjoyed broad bipartisan support.
The backlash has spread across states including Ohio, Texas, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Wyoming and Michigan. Candidates are citing concerns over electricity demand, water use, infrastructure costs and the potential burden on local taxpayers and ratepayers.
President Donald Trump has sought to address the concerns by backing a pledge requiring data center operators to cover additional power generation and grid costs. Major technology companies, including Google, Microsoft, Amazon and OpenAI, have supported the measure.
Trump continues to argue that data centers bring jobs, investment and strategic advantages, while acknowledging the industry needs better public relations.
