China has reaffirmed its support for Cuba as tensions between Havana and Washington intensify, with a senior Chinese Communist Party official describing the two countries as “good brothers.”

According to an official Chinese readout, Liu Haixing, head of the party’s International Department, met Cuban officials in Havana and said bilateral relations had reached an “unprecedented new height.”

Liu pledged continued Chinese support for Cuba’s socialist system, sovereignty and opposition to external pressure.

The talks come as President Donald Trump’s administration increases pressure on Havana. Washington has accused China of operating intelligence facilities in Cuba and recently sanctioned a senior Cuban military official over alleged military procurement from Beijing.

China has rejected the intelligence allegations and opposed U.S. sanctions and threats against Cuba. Beijing has also expanded practical assistance, including delivering another 5,000 solar energy equipment sets as Cuba struggles with nationwide power outages.

Cuban officials thanked Beijing for its support, while both sides agreed to deepen strategic cooperation and maintain high-level exchanges.
