Meta has announced new legal action against Israeli spyware company NSO Group, alleging that the firm violated a court order that permanently barred it from targeting WhatsApp and its users.
The move follows a lengthy legal battle that resulted in a U.S. court issuing a permanent injunction against NSO last year and ordering the company to pay $4 million in damages.
Meta now plans to seek a federal court contempt order, arguing that NSO continued activities prohibited by the ruling.
Meta also reported the creation of unauthorized test accounts allegedly connected to the effort.
WhatsApp officials argued that NSO continues to disregard court rulings despite being placed on the U.S. government’s Entity List.
NSO is appealing the permanent injunction while also seeking to expand its presence in the United States.
Meanwhile, a coalition of civil rights organizations has backed Meta’s position, filing legal briefs in support of maintaining the court-imposed restrictions on the spyware firm.
