The Pentagon has lifted the suspension of eight South Carolina National Guard Apache helicopter pilots after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth urged state officials to end an investigation into their July 4 beach flyover.

According to the report, the pilots had been suspended after videos circulated showing AH-64 Apache helicopters flying at low altitude over crowded beaches during the annual Salute From The Shore event.

The report said Hegseth intervened on Thursday, calling for the inquiry to be dropped.

Representative Russell Fry also publicly defended the pilots, arguing they should be recognized for participating in the Independence Day event rather than face disciplinary action.

According to the report, military flight safety rules generally require aircraft to maintain a minimum altitude of 1,000 feet over congested crowds.

The report noted that those standards have received increased attention following a fatal aviation incident at Kadena Air Force Base in April 2025, underscoring the importance of maintaining safe operating procedures during public events.
