A new Washington Post–Schar School poll shows that most Washington, DC, residents oppose President Donald Trump’s federal takeover of the city’s police force.

According to the survey, 79% disapprove of Trump’s order placing the police under federal control and deploying the National Guard and FBI across the city. Only 17% support the move.

The poll also found that 61% of residents who noticed the heightened federal presence feel less safe. While Trump has argued the measures restored security, most residents disagree.

Nearly two-thirds believe the action will not reduce violent crime. Instead, majorities say economic opportunities, stronger gun laws, and more community policing would be more effective.

Trump’s approval in DC remains low at 15%. Meanwhile, Mayor Muriel Bowser’s approval stands at 53%, unchanged since May. The poll, conducted August 14-17 among 604 residents, carries a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 points.
