A new poll of 19 countries from around the world finds that in 11 nations, fewer than half of respondents believe their most recent election was free and fair – a bleak viewpoint in a year when more than half of the world’s population will be tasked with voting in elections.
The report published by the International Institute of Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) shows that voters in only eight countries believe their most recent election was fair.
The poll also shows that only 47% of respondents in the U.S. express faith that their country has credible electoral processes.
The survey was conducted between July 2023 and January 2024, polling about 1,500 people in each of 19 countries.
