Secretary of State Marco Rubio is convening representatives from 67 countries in Washington to discuss international cooperation against what the Trump administration describes as a resurgence of far-left political terrorism, reported by CNN.
According to the State Department, the meeting aims to strengthen intelligence sharing, law enforcement coordination and joint counterterrorism efforts. Rubio is expected to argue that violent left-wing extremists, including anarchist and anti-fascist groups, represent a growing security threat.
CNN reported that most participating nations are from Europe, with additional delegates from Asia and the Western Hemisphere. Israel is the only Middle Eastern country attending.
However, several former U.S. counterterrorism officials questioned the administration's assessment, arguing that far-left extremism does not pose the same level of threat as ISIS or far-right extremist groups.
They accused the administration of politicizing the issue and overstating the danger posed by left-wing organizations.
