The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear a major Second Amendment case that will determine whether states and local governments can ban AR-15-style rifles and other semi-automatic firearms, reported by CNN.

💡
The case includes challenges to gun restrictions in Illinois and Connecticut, where residents argue that laws prohibiting the sale and possession of certain semi-automatic weapons violate their constitutional right to bear arms. According to the report, at least 10 states currently enforce similar bans.

The court had previously declined to hear comparable cases, but conservative Justice Brett Kavanaugh indicated last year that the issue would likely reach the justices.

Gun rights advocates argue that AR-15 rifles are among the most commonly owned firearms in the United States and therefore deserve constitutional protection.

Meanwhile, Cook County officials defended their ordinance by citing numerous mass shootings involving such weapons, arguing their firepower makes them especially dangerous.

The Supreme Court's decision could reshape gun laws nationwide.
