Health authorities are investigating whether Taco Bell is linked to a multistate outbreak of Cyclospora, a parasite that causes intestinal illness.

According to the report, some Taco Bell restaurants temporarily removed fresh ingredients, including lettuce, pico de gallo, guacamole, and cilantro-onion mix, after notices cited a nationwide recall affecting ingredient availability.

The report said Cyclospora infections can cause severe gastrointestinal illness, including prolonged diarrhea, with symptoms often appearing about a week after exposure, making it difficult for investigators to identify the original source of contamination.

Michigan has reported 2,640 cases and 44 hospitalizations, while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed hundreds of cases across multiple states.

According to the report, attorneys are preparing lawsuits against Taco Bell on behalf of affected customers, while industry analysts say available evidence suggests the issue may be localized rather than affecting the broader restaurant sector.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not yet identified the definitive source of the outbreak.
