A 15-year-old New Jersey girl has withdrawn her lawsuit against Meta Platforms, Google, Snap and YouTube, ending a closely watched case that was scheduled for trial in October.

The lawsuit alleged that the social media platforms contributed to her depression and addiction to social media.

The case was consolidated in Los Angeles with more than 3,300 personal injury claims and was designated a “bellwether” case that could have helped lawyers assess how juries might value similar claims.

The teenager's attorney said the lawsuit was dismissed so the girl could resume her life while continuing to support efforts to improve protections for young people. Meta, however, has argued that the plaintiff had a pre-existing mental health condition.

Meta continues to face separate trials over allegations that its platforms are addictive to children. Earlier individual cases resulted in verdicts of $4.2 million against Meta and $1.8 million against Google, while other companies have reached settlements in related cases.
