President Donald Trump said Monday he would “certainly” invoke the Insurrection Act if protests in Los Angeles escalated, describing parts of the city as experiencing what “seemed” like an insurrection.
“If there’s an insurrection, I would certainly invoke it. We’ll see,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, calling the situation in LA “terrible” over the past two days. He said federal forces would leave “when it’s safe,” and cited local law enforcement as saying the unrest was “more than we can handle.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom sharply pushed back, accusing Trump of lying about a phone call between them. “There was no call. Not even a voicemail,” Newsom said on X, refuting Trump’s claim that they spoke “a day ago.”
“Americans should be alarmed that a President deploying Marines onto our streets doesn’t even know who he’s talking to,” Newsom added.
