The Trump administration announced a new policy Monday offering financial incentives for undocumented immigrants to voluntarily leave the United States. Under the plan, individuals who choose to self-deport will be flown out on commercial flights at government expense and receive a $1,000 stipend.
Officials say the policy is designed to reduce deportation costs, which typically average $17,000 per person. By shifting to voluntary departure, the administration estimates the cost would drop to $4,500 — a savings of nearly 70 percent.

“If you are here illegally, self-deportation is the best, safest and most cost-effective way to leave the United States to avoid arrest,” said Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in a statement.
The announcement is expected to spark significant political debate amid broader immigration enforcement measures and legal challenges. Administration officials say the new program will begin implementation within weeks.
