President Donald Trump has ordered a major expansion of U.S. commercial space launches, setting a goal of at least 1,000 launches annually by 2030.
Federal agencies have been directed to identify suitable public land for new launch and re-entry sites as the administration seeks to accelerate growth in the space industry.
The U.S. recorded 178 launches last year, including 170 by SpaceX, which deployed roughly 2,500 satellites. Trump also ordered agencies to identify a new federal re-entry site within 90 days and limit government activities that compete with commercial space companies unless required for national security.
The push comes as Congress continues to press NASA to prioritise the Artemis lunar program, while private space companies increasingly focus on long-term ambitions for human missions to Mars.
