Two police officers were shot and killed Sunday night while responding to a domestic disturbance in Tremonton, Utah, according to the Associated Press. A Box Elder County sheriff’s deputy and a police dog were also wounded but are recovering.

Authorities said the suspect opened fire on the first officer who arrived, then shot a second officer moments later. Bystanders persuaded the gunman to surrender, and he was arrested on charges of aggravated murder.

Police Chief Chad Reyes called the slain officers “heroes,” emphasizing the dangers of domestic calls. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox described it as a “terrible and tragic night,” joining the state in mourning.

The names of the officers and suspect have not yet been released. Tremonton, with about 10,000 residents, lies 75 miles north of Salt Lake City.
