A vessel was struck in the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, forcing the United Nations to suspend efforts to evacuate thousands of stranded seafarers and raising fresh concerns over maritime security, as reported by CNN.

A U.S. official told CNN the ship was hit by an Iranian drone, although Tehran has not claimed responsibility.

According to the report, the attack came hours after Iran's Revolutionary Guards warned that ships should only use routes approved by Tehran. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said the vessel's bridge was damaged, but no casualties or environmental damage were reported.

The incident prompted the International Maritime Organization to pause its evacuation mission involving more than 11,000 seafarers. Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez said crew safety remained the top priority.

The strike also tested last week's U.S.-Iran agreement, which seeks to keep the Strait of Hormuz open while broader negotiations continue.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated that the United States opposes any Iranian tolls or restrictions on international shipping through the strategic waterway. Oil prices briefly climbed following the attack before easing.
