The U.S. Army plans to phase out a specialized Unmanned Assault Battalion created to study lessons from Ukraine's drone warfare, marking a shift in how the service is organising its approach to unmanned systems.

The unit was established last year as the Army sought to adapt to the growing importance of drones on modern battlefields.

An Army official said the battalion will participate in an exercise through September before refocusing on its core mission as an airborne infantry unit.

The decision comes amid reported disagreements between Acting Army Chief of Staff Gen. Christopher LaNeve and former senior officers who supported the unit's creation.

LaNeve recently outlined his priorities in a document titled The Army Azimuth, setting out his vision for the service's future.

The move has drawn attention because Ukraine's war has demonstrated the growing role of drones in reconnaissance, targeting and combat. Retired Gen. David Petraeus has argued that the U.S. military must accelerate efforts to incorporate drone technology into future operations.
