House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Democrats are not currently focused on impeaching President Donald Trump should they regain control of the House after the midterm elections.

Speaking at CNBC’s CEO Council Summit in Washington, Jeffries said the party’s immediate priority remains addressing affordability concerns and presenting solutions aimed at improving Americans’ quality of life.

While criticizing the Trump administration as being “completely and totally out of control,” Jeffries declined to rule out future impeachment proceedings.

According to the report, he said Democrats have neither committed to nor dismissed the possibility, leaving their options open depending on future circumstances.

Jeffries argued that a Democratic majority would instead concentrate on government accountability and anti-corruption efforts.

He pointed to proposals such as banning members of Congress from trading stocks and prohibiting lawmakers and staff from participating in prediction markets.

The New York Democrat also expressed confidence about the party’s prospects in the upcoming midterms, citing recent special election victories.

He said Democrats intend to focus on transparency, ethics reforms, and policies aimed at solving problems facing American families.
