China Unicom has warned that a Trump administration proposal to restrict connections between U.S. telecommunications carriers and Chinese telecom firms could disrupt communications between the world’s two largest economies and create broader risks for global networks.
In a filing submitted to the Federal Communications Commission, China Unicom’s U.S. unit argued that the proposal would harm American companies with significant operations and supply chain interests in China.
According to China Unicom, Chinese telecom operators serve as major gateways for communications traffic between the United States and China.
The company warned that a blanket prohibition could fracture an important segment of the global communications system and complicate cross-border connectivity.
Such a move could effectively force Chinese carriers to cease operating certain facilities in the country.
Opposition to the proposal is not limited to Chinese firms. USTelecom, which represents major U.S. carriers including AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile, argued that the restrictions could reduce visibility into potentially risky traffic, disrupt established communication channels, and create uncertainty for businesses that rely on reliable cross-border telecommunications services.
