China has announced a new breakthrough in space solar power technology after researchers successfully tested a wireless energy transmission system capable of powering multiple moving targets simultaneously.
According to state media reports, the system was developed by a team at Xidian University in Xian under senior engineer Duan Baoyan. The facility reportedly transmitted more than 1,100 watts of power across roughly 100 meters while maintaining accurate microwave beam control.
Chinese scientists have taken a major step toward building a space solar power station, a giant power plant in space that could one day send energy back to Earth or to spacecraft. Researchers also tested a drone that received wireless microwave power while flying at about 30 kilometers per hour. The report said the system achieved an overall transmission efficiency of 20.8%.
The project is part of China’s long-term “Zhuri” initiative aimed at building orbiting solar power stations capable of collecting solar energy in space and transmitting it back to Earth wirelessly.
Analysts view the technology as a potential future solution for powering satellites, drones and lunar infrastructure.
