SoftBank acquired Graphcore in 2024 to strengthen its ambitions in artificial general intelligence and semiconductor development. Once viewed as a potential rival to Nvidia, Graphcore struggled commercially before the takeover.
SoftBank has aggressively expanded its AI investments through partnerships involving OpenAI, Oracle, Arm, and Ampere Computing. Graphcore is also continuing global expansion plans, including a proposed £1 billion AI campus project in Bengaluru, India.
