A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck off the coast of Mexico's southern state of Chiapas, prompting a tsunami warning for nearby coastal areas.

According to the report, the quake occurred near Puerto Madero at a shallow depth of about six miles, causing strong tremors that were felt across southern Mexico as well as parts of neighboring Guatemala and El Salvador.

The report said the U.S. Tsunami Warning System issued an alert for coastlines within 300 kilometers of the epicenter, warning that tsunami waves of up to one meter above normal tide levels were possible.
