The massive investment fueling the artificial intelligence infrastructure boom is increasingly relying on complex debt and financing structures, raising questions about leverage and potential market risks, according to CNBC.

Nvidia is working with major financial firms to mobilize more than $500 billion in outside capital for AI infrastructure. Meanwhile, technology companies are increasingly using bonds, joint ventures, leases and other arrangements to finance data centers and equipment.

Goldman Sachs analysts estimate hyperscalers have $1.5 trillion in combined lease commitments, including roughly $1 trillion in obligations that have not yet appeared on corporate financial statements. The report said these arrangements could obscure future liquidity needs as payments come due.

Concerns intensified after leveraged AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness suffered major losses and faced margin calls. However, market experts disagree over the broader threat. Some warn elevated borrowing could amplify volatility, while others say high earnings expectations and extreme concentration in technology stocks pose a greater risk.

The Alternative Investment Management Association said there is currently no evidence that hedge fund leverage represents an inherent systemic threat to financial stability.
