A major Russian missile and drone assault on Kyiv overnight sparked a fire at the historic Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site that dates back nearly 1,000 years, according to CNN and Ukrainian authorities.
At least five people were killed and more than 30 injured in Kyiv, while nationwide casualties rose to at least 11 dead. The attack also left around 140,000 households without electricity, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strike and called for stronger international action ahead of the G7 summit in France. UNESCO also denounced the damage, warning that attacks on cultural landmarks threaten history, education and community recovery.
