A Boston court has preliminarily approved a $53 million class-action settlement resolving lawsuits against Harvard University over the mishandling and theft of donated human remains.
The lawsuits accused Harvard of failing to properly supervise its morgue operations after a former manager exploited his position to steal and sell body parts.
Harvard Medical School leaders described Lodge's conduct as a serious betrayal of the medical community's values and expressed regret to affected families. The settlement is expected to receive final approval in December.
According to the report, Harvard will also establish an annual scholarship for medical students. Attorneys said the agreement could reinforce accountability for institutions responsible for donated human remains.
