Residents in Gary, Indiana, are entering their ninth day without electricity after severe storms caused widespread damage across the region.

More than 300,000 customers lost power on August 11, with Northern Indiana Public Service Company expecting full restoration by August 25.

NIPSCO said winds reaching 99 mph toppled trees onto power lines and poles, causing damage that requires major reconstruction rather than routine repairs. Crews are expected to replace about 300 utility poles and 44 transmission structures.

The prolonged outage has created financial and safety challenges for residents, with generator fuel costing some households nearly $75 a day. The lack of street lighting has also increased concerns about security at night.

More than 600 utility workers are involved in restoration efforts. Community organisations and businesses are providing assistance, including a $100,000 donation from Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana and a supply distribution event planned with the Salvation Army.
