Israel and the Iran-backed group Hezbollah have agreed to a ceasefire that will take effect at 4 p.m. local time on Friday, according to a senior U.S. official cited by Reuters.
The ceasefire comes after overnight Israeli airstrikes reportedly killed at least 18 people in Lebanon, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry. Meanwhile, four Israeli soldiers were killed in one of Hezbollah’s deadliest attacks of the conflict.
The report said the U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding requires an immediate and permanent halt to military operations across the region, including in Lebanon. Continued clashes had raised concerns about the stability of that agreement.
Recent tensions also exposed differences between President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump publicly urged restraint, while Vice President JD Vance defended the Iran deal and criticized opposition from some Israeli officials.
The ceasefire is expected to ease pressure on the wider regional peace process, though questions remain about its long-term durability.
